Professional Standards

Communication Best Practices

To equip Eller students with the communication skills necessary to succeed in professional and academic environments, all students are required to demonstrate proficiency in written and oral communication skills via rigorous core communication classes.

To assist students in the full integration of their professional communication skill set, all Eller faculty are encouraged to require that students demonstrate the communication standards articulated in their communication courses.

Students who have completed the requisite communication courses will demonstrate competency in the key components of professional communication, including:

  • Audience analysis
  • Communicator credibility
  • Message coherence
  • Design, delivery, and style flexibility

To uphold college-wide professional standards and further refine their communication skills, Eller students should demonstrate the principles of effective writing and speaking (transferable skill sets) in all courses at Eller College of Management.

Professional Writing

Students should be able to establish and maintain professionalism in all written deliverables, including email, memos, short and long reports.

Students should demonstrate the ability to prepare well crafted, coherent messages that are audience-focused, provide relevant and sufficient information, demonstrate a high level of readability, and have minimal mechanical errors.

Presentation Skills

Students should be able to deliver engaging, effective, audience-based, interactive presentations, including handling digressions, thinking on their feet, and engaging in “guided” presentation (presentation by dictated by audience need.)

Students should demonstrate the ability to prepare polished presentations (presenting without notes) that provide an audience-focused message, showcase visual strategy that enhances comprehension and message impact.

Business Communication Standards

Eller has adopted a uniform standards policy for grading and determining where students stand in their knowledge and overall grasp of effective business communication.

The rubric for writing can be found here. The criteria in this rubric looks closely at students' ability to create high quality, professional documents.
